Company Profile

AlphaSense is a global company with over 1,000 clients and offices throughout the US, EMEA, and India. Their business was growing rapidly and existing tools and infrastructure were not able to scale to support their ever-expanding client base.

Developing their own infrastructure and building coordinated GPU machines would have required significant time and resources. It would have taken engineers away from their primary purpose, developing AlphaSense’s core product. AlphaSense was looking to quickly increase their ability to run experiments in parallel, optimize hyperparameters, and service the boom in client demand.

AlphaSense searched for ways to expand and integrate a ready-made service. They needed to scale with little interruption to their AI work. Spell piqued their interest. They performed a trial project to test the features of the platform and were drawn to the ease of use and fast tools. Shortly after the initial trial, AlphaSense deployed Spell company-wide.

Dmitry Kan, Head of Search Technology, and one of the company’s first developers, said, “My first impression was how clear the Spell interface and navigation is. Implementation and onboarding were easy. The UI got me up and running quickly.”

Alphasense’s team is spread out globally and it’s important that they’re on a platform that’s easy to use, simple when onboarding new hires, and makes clear communication possible. AlphaSense AI Researcher, Tanvi Sahay, said,  “It’s great for collaboration. My coworker and I work on projects together and we’re in different time zones. Spell makes working on projects together really convenient.”

Spell’s platform provides project visibility and a place to share and compare work remotely.

The advantages AlphaSense has experienced working on a high-powered machine learning cloud platform have been tenfold. They’re experiencing faster results and increased efficiency.

Spell’s intuitive platform makes it easier to work with Jupyter Notebook and JupyterLab. With the web console, users can share live Jupyter Workspaces, duplicate workspaces with one click, and export workspaces to a Python script. Spell’s command-line tools make it much easier to transition from prototyping in a Jupyter Notebook to launching dozens of experiments, on cloud GPUs, in parallel. Team members have been able to significantly reduce the time it takes to start and optimize projects. Sharing and comparing notebooks, and working with an out-of-the-box platform, has made a big impact.

Prashant Budania, AlphaSense AI Research Engineer, said, “It’s 10 times better in terms of overall productivity and time saved. Spell provides a single machine and I can run 50 experiments if I want to.” AlphaSense is working faster, collaborating in new ways, and able to reproduce experiments. Dmitry added, “I haven’t seen a comparable tool on the market. Keep doing what you’re doing.”

"One of the big advantages of Spell was our team could get up and running right away without slowing down ongoing projects."
